BarCamp is an open-platform conference where we allow people from all walks of life to share their ideas, skills and so forth. We always push the idea that a conference should not always be formal and you don’t get to say a word unless you are asking a question. It can be casual where everyone is comfortable and there is an open environment that allows the audience and the speakers to communicate.
Directly quoted from Wikipedia about what is BarCamp:
“BarCamp is an international network of user generated conferences — open, participatory workshop-events, whose content is provided by participants.”
The first BarCamps focused on early-stage web applications, and were related to open source technologies, social protocols, and open data formats. The format has also been used for a variety of other topics, including public transit, health care, and passions.
Therefore since the year of 2009, BarCamp Penang was held on a yearly basis here in Penang, and it has been a knowledge-sharing platform that serves the purpose to ignite the passion and enthusiasm of every level of the community in Penang. It is an open-for-all and free event, an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. And this year, BarCamp Penang is happening again on the 1st of August, at PSDC Penang!

Our theme this year is about “Have the Passion, Take the Action!”. Every year, BarCamp Penang has always been one of the most happening community event in Penang you will never want to miss out. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from participants who are the main actors of the event. It is also an excellent way to hear about new things and meet new people!
How does a BarCamp event work?
If you had never been to BarCamp before, this is a brief schedule example of how a BarCamp event actually looks like:
This year, similarly there will be a blank schedule from 8am to 7pm (split by hours) and all of the participants of this conference may write the title of their talk on a piece of paper provided and stick them onto the schedule. After that, time will be given for the audience to vote on the talk that they prefer most and the talk with the least amount of heat (or none) will be taken out of the board. There will be 4 talks going on each 45 minutes and the audience will get to choose. If there are 6 talks suggested during that slot, then 2 of the talks that did not receive any heat or vote will be taken off.
One more thing: since it is an ad-hoc un-conference, the event will be carried out in a very casual way and not much rules and regulations. However, do note that there is strictly no selling, no company sales pitch and no sensitive topic (politics, religions, etc.) allowed in BarCamp, as we want to focus on providing good quality learning contents that will benefit every BarCamp participants. BarCamp’s volunteers will be there around to regulate, and feel free to raise to us if you feel any topic that is inappropriate.
